Fear Not on Halloween!

On this holiday of Halloween, I want to share a message that I received last Sunday during a worship service led by Pastor Carl Howard that raised the relevance of spirituality on this day.  I preface this blog by saying that I’m sure I will not relay his message with the breadth and depth that he shared, but I at least want to share my basic understanding with you in hope that you may be able to allay others’ possible spiritual fear on this day.  The perspective is a Judeo-Christian one, but I believe the message transcends all faiths.

We all know Halloween…a day filled with costumes, candy, and some pretty scary and frightening things. Many people enjoy the thrill of being frightened!  Others steer clear of the scary stuff (like me!).  Similarly, our lives are at times pleasant and other times quite scary.  How do we cope with the times in our lives when we are scared and afraid?  Spiritually, we can take comfort in our relationships with others and with God.

Consider this message from Isaiah 41:10-13 (NRSV):

do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.  Yes, all who are incensed against you shall be ashamed and disgraced; those who strive against you shall be as nothing and shall perish.  You shall seek those who contend with you, but you shall not find them; those who war against you shall be as nothing at all.  For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Do not fear, I will help you.

The message is one of not being afraid for God is always with you!  This is true on Halloween and all days.

We sang this hymn, “Be Not Afraid” by Robert Dufford, during our worship service that day.  Listen as the words share a similar message.

Are there times in your life when you were afraid and felt the presence of God guiding you through it?  How do you connect with God?  Have you assisted others with their relationship with God during troubled times?  And how did you do this?  Do you have any spiritual care advice for fellow faith community nurses in this regard? Please share with us in the comments section.

There are things we fear at Halloween that present immediate dangers to our children as they have fun on Halloween, but we can do things to prevent them from getting hurt.  There are many resources out there to guide us…

I hope that you all have a Happy Halloween and feel safe with God at your side today and all days!
