Then, sign up for this two day Orientation offered by Griffin Hospital through their Community Outreach & Parish Nursing Program.

When? Saturday, November 1, 2014 & November 15, 2014. We will start at 8:30am and go until 5pm.

Where? Classes to be held in the Parish Nurse office at 6 Mountain St., Derby, CT

CEUs are applied for and pending. We have trimmed the orientation down so it is a two day program. It’s listed at 16 hours and we will keep to the schedule. Please pass on to any and all nurses (or others) who may be interested in taking the program. ~Daun Barrett, RN, Director

1. History and Development of Parish Nursing 2 hours

• Identifies the religious and historical roots of Parish Nursing
• Identifies the persons and organizations that have influenced the development of Parish Nursing in the U.S.
• Describes the Parish Nurse Statement of Philosophy
• Discusses the qualifications of the Parish Nurse
• Discusses the rolls of the Parish Nurse
• Identifies personal strengths and qualities to draw upon for beginning a PN program

2. Legal Aspects of Parish Nursing 2 hours

• Define Parish Nursing, Health and Healing
• Discuss Basic Legal Concepts
• Discuss Liability issues as related to;
• Discuss Scope & Standards Of Practice for Faith Community Nursing (ANA/Health Ministries)
• Discuss how the Good Samaritan Law applies to practice as a PN

3. Grant Writing (this includes writing for a “small grant”) 3 hours

• List the purpose of grants
• List funding opportunities
• Discuss the fundamentals of Grant Writing
• List resources for grants
• Identifies and lists the contents of a good grant proposal
• List ways to tailor a grant proposal
• Identifies means to determine if the grant’s goals are accomplished and how they will be used
• Identifies possible funding sources and prepare a realistic budget
• Describes what is included in the appendix of a grant proposal

4. Documenting the Journey/Using your Community Resources 2 hours

• Lists contents and purpose of items in PN monthly report
• Describe where to find national resources and how to access them
• Describe where to find state resources and how to access them
• Describe where to find local resources and how to access them
• Discuss how to use resources

5. Community Assessment 1hours

• Define church community
• Determine how to apply a needs/assets assessment to the church setting
• Describe the role of the parish nurse as coach/mentor in ministry development
• Formulate a system to support, recognize and reward volunteers
• List tools available for discovering personality and individual gifts for serving
• Define a Health Cabinet and it’s role in Parish Community
• Formulate a support system to recognize and reward volunteers
• Discuss resources available to PN’s

6. Educational Programs 2 hours

• Identify ways to determine the needs of the Faith Community
• Describe steps for planning a program
• Identify ways to evaluate success of program

7. Whole Person Health 1 hour

• Present the Theology of Whole Person Health
• Application of Concept
• Worship Application

8. Spirituality and Healthcare 2 hour

• Defines Spirituality
• Lists aspects of spirituality
• Discusses the relationship between spirituality, religion, philosophy of life and intuition and it significance for healthcare
• Discusses other ways that help express spirituality
• Identifies various pathways for spiritual healing
• Defines and identifies seven core spiritual needs
• Completes spiritual assessment worksheet
• Defines role of Pastoral Care worker
• Identifies signs for possible Pastoral intervention/referral
• Discuss how referrals are made

9. Grief, Loss and other Hard Topics – How to Listen, How to Care 1 hour
